Getting Ready for the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair

What a mouthful - 'The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair' - held in Manchester  October 4th - 7th.
I will be exhibiting there this year, (Stand 98), and now with my son Luke going back to school on Tuesday, I'm hoping to focus all my energies on getting my stock together for this event.  It's the first time for me, so am hoping its a good one.  I went to visit last year, and it was soooooo busy!  I'm almost buried under a pile of felt 'pebbles!'
I have been working on some new pictures too...... and even though I say it myself, I am very happy with them.  I hope you like them too!

Feltmaking Day - September 1st

Well what a great day, filled with fun, productivity and lovely people...
I can't believe how productive everyone was.  Everyone went home with at least one, and in some cases, a few wonderful creations.  The beauty of Feltmaking days, is that you can make what you like.  There were felt pictures, Nuno scarves, cobweb scarves, flowers, bowls. and bookmarks!.Phew........  Well done everyone!

Demonstration, Durham Guild of Spinners and Weavers

Many thanks for a great evening with the Guild of Spinners and Weavers in Durham.
What a great crowd of people - and so interested in everything I had to say and do! 

It is so much easier talking about ones self!!! But I did also demonstrate how to make a nuno felt scarf - which turned out far better than expected, as I did have to rush it a little.

It only took me three hours to get home! what with fog and diversions.... arriving safley at 1.00am. 
But it was worth it...............

My Friday class were very forgiving with their zombiefied teacher!!  Thanks everyone...

What a great weekend at Woolfest.  As usual, it had that exciting buzz, and was nice and busy despite the terrible weather, so a very big thankyou to all of you who made it, came to say hello, and maybe even made a purchase! And to those of you who didn't manage it, there is always next year......

Open Studios

Many thanks to all of you who ventured out and visited my open studio at the weekend.  After a quiet start it got quite busy..... and I even remembered to take a few photographs.

Well, it has been another busy week.....
Wednesday evening, (after a slight detour to visit to Ikea!), I went to the open evening of the Taster Exhibition for North Yorkhsire Open Studios in Harrogate at the Royal Hall,  "Secret Spaces, Hidden Gems".  There was a great turn out, and lots of lovely art and craft to ogle at.  I even succumbed and purchased a beautiful ceramic pot by Fiona Mazza.  I just love the feeling I get when I  buy a little piece original art, and can support a fellow artist. If funds had allowed, I could have gone crazy.  I loved the ceramics by Eric Moss, blacksmith Annabelle Bradley's tree, and a number of paintings.  The exhibition is on until the 17th June, so if you get the chance, I recommend going to see it.  (You can also see my woven and felted scarf, 'Fossil' which is also on show!)   The Royal Hall has an amazing Theatre, which is worth a look too.

Friday morning was the last of this term's weekly art and textile class.  As usual, everyone was in good form, and kept me on my toes making a variety of items including needlefelting,  felt bowl and vases, collage and painting.  And as soon as they had gone, it was a mad rush to get my things together for my trip to Louth via The Ropewalk Gallery, Barton on Humber.

At the Ropewalk, I was discussing my new work with Laura McNair, (gallery co-ordinator) and we agreed that I would deliver  a range of my new work in September, just in time for winter, Christmas etc.....

I'm now back after spending a great weekend with the lovely ladies of Louth Embroidery Group.  Friday evening they had a go at making a felt flower, followed by a Nuno scarf workshop on Saturday.  They all did a great job, and went home with some wonderful creations. They all seemed to be pleased with the results of their labours.

I would like to send a special thankyou to Jane Abson,( and her husband John,) for putting me up in their lovely home. I can't remember the last time I had such a good night's sleep - although, they (the group!) did work me hard - so maybe that has something to do with it.

So now all efforts  are focused on Open studios which start next weekend, and I hope that some of you will be able to fit in a visit.

I also hope you have all had a great Jubilee, despite the cold weather!

Next Workshop

Please note, there have been a few changes to my original workshop itinerary.  Basic print and dye techniques in July and devore and discharge printing  in September have been replaced with feltmaking days.  Feltmaking days give you the opportunity to create almost anything in felt, (apart from large items such as clothing).  So if you have missed your preferred technique, now is your chance.

The next workshop is Transfer Printing on June 12th.  Transfer Printing is a fun technique, which is relatively instant!  This is an experimental workshop, exploring the various ways you can utilise the technique. 

Primarily for use on synthetic fabrics - you can create some colourful and creative images. Dyes are painted onto paper, and then 'transferred' by heat (iron), onto fabric. It is great fun, and has to be one of my favourite things.  The world is your lobster!

Dyeing for June

Having struggled with my website blog, I have returned to Blogger!  Hopefully it will look a little more professional, and I may get a few more hits.

So what's new!!??  It's only 2010 since the last post....(doesn't time fly?!)   I won't bore you with the last two years, but this is what I am up to right now!!  And I have to say, for those of you who don't know me,  my work, or haven't seen me/it for a while, over the past year, my work has developed at a fast rate of knots!

Well it's that time of year again - it's all go, preparing for a busy time ahead. June has to be my busiest month.

You will be proud of me.....I have been very busy (with the help of the lovely Pat, Woodend's friendly handiman!) sprucing up my studio. It has been properly de-fluffed!, painted and beautified, in anticipation of lots of visitors. Hopefully it will still look clean and tidy by the time they get here...?! I'll try my best.

Firstly, Jubilee Weekend, I will be revisiting Louth Embroiderer's group to deliver a demonstration and Nuno felt workshop. Louth is such a beautiful and unique town, and the people so friendly, I can't wait to go back.

Then it is North Yorkshire Open Studios on 9th/ 10th &16th/17th June. This is your opportunity to see my new felt pictures, pebbles (with a difference), and woven scarves, and of course I will have my usual SALE Bucket, full of greatly reduced priced scarves. And why not kill two (three) birds with one stone and visit jeweller Samantha Birch and Painter Sally Gaitie while you are here at Woodend, and/or visit many of the other amazing artists in North Yorkshire.

Followed closely by Woolfest  on 22nd &23rd June. Dyeing, creating, and generally getting orgainised for a woolly weekend. Why not visit for a great day out in Cockermouth. I Can't wait. I will be trekking up there with my good friend Jan Bee Brown, and hopefully meeting up with fellow feltmakers, Jenny Pepper and Jacky Lunn.

Grassington and District Embroiderer's Guild

A big thank you to Grassington Embroiderer's Guild for employing me to give a workshop for some of their members last week. We had a great day, and everyone seemed happy with their scarves, which were absolutely beautiful. Well done everyone. It is a beautiful part of the country, and I thoroughly enjoyed my trip.

New Outlet

News this week.....
I have a new outlet from which to sell my scarves. Jane Wheldon, of 'Get ahead Hat's' near Pickering and Scarborough, has kindly agreed to stock my scarves. It is a very exciting time!

And now you can also buy a beautiful handcrafted scarf, wrap or boa to go with it!! Felt Flower Workshp, 25 April

Well what a great day we had on Sunday..........Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and were extremely industrious making lots of beautiful flowers, as well as mastering the different techniques. Note all the flowers in the foreground of the picture!

This week

Today, I been mainly planting broad beans!

For those of you who don't know, my husband and I have a field where we grow organic veg. (Only on a small scale for ourselves and a few friends & family.)

This weekend we have been planting seeds - we are very behind with our plot, having only just dug it over. We don't have much experience - but we are hoping that when people say that plants just want to grow - they are right!

We have the best view over Scarborough so being in the field is incredibly therapeutic, and this weekend we have had glorious weather - winter finally seems to be over. These pictures are of one of my wraps, (amongst the leeks) last year. You can see Scarborough Castle in the distance.

I am currently waiting in anticipation for the result of my recent photoshoot with Richard Wood, photographer also based here at Woodend Creative Workspace. Richard patiently spent the day taking photo's of my new collection. You would never imagine how tiring it can be just hanging up scarves and taking photo's of them - but I assure you by the end of the day, we had both had enough.
As soon as I receive the finished products, I will be adding them to my website, and I may even post a few pics on my blog! So watch this space.....

The start of things to come

Hello Everybody!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Lindsey Tyson, and I am a textile designer and artist. Having spent many years travelling with my work, I now live and work in Scarborough - most enterprising town in Europe!
This is my first attempt at 'blogging' so I hope you will bear with me. Although I am not a twitterer, (not yet at least), I thought that it would be nice to share my ups and downs, my aims and ambitions, and record my achievements as they develop. Currently I am in the process of designing a new collection of scarves and wraps which I hope to unleash on the world very shortly.

I also thought that it would be great fun to amass a gallery of photo's of those wonderful people who have bought my scarves and wraps - (preferably wearing them) - so if you are one of those people, please feel free to send me your pics. (I will put them on my web site, and on this blog, if I can work out how!!)
